Flexible Organic Light Emitting Diodes on Plastics

Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) can generate light from electricity and are widely considered as the next generation light source. OLEDs are a natural source of light incorporating a wide continuous spectrum, resembling nature, in contrast to most artificial light sources.
They can be developed with printing technologies on flexible and rigid substrates and can therefore bend and fold. They can emit in any color, be made in any standard shape and be transparent. For these reasons OLED lighting is expected to be one of the fastest growing markets in organic electronics (OEs).
As the low cost, printed & flexible OLEDs attract great interest, OET has expanded its activities in light and power management to energetic light emitting devices. OET pioneers in this field by incorporating its perennial experience in R2R processing on flexible substrates and paves the way in the European community on flexible and printed OLED technology by leading in National and European R&I projects (i.e. Apollon).

R2R Production for Large-Scale Manufacturing

OET’s R&D group currently develops Blue, Green, Yellow and Red OLEDs, while concentrating its efforts in White emission OLEDs for outdoor lighting. Indicatively, a threshold operating Voltage as low as 3 Volt with maximum Luminance of 1000 cd/m² is achievable.

OET designs and develops R2R printing, laser processing and quality control technologies, aiming at cost-effective, high-throughput manufacturing on flexible plastic surfaces. Its progress in scalable production and achievement of the nanoscale precision in R2R printing machines, optical engineering, reduction of manufacturing costs and increasing yield and efficiency of OPVs is based on a huge R&D investment that took place the last years in developing unique production lines, laser scribing technologies and in-line optical precision metrology and quality control tools.
