FLEXIBLE OPVs - R2R printed OPV modules developed by OET

Organic Photovoltaics (OPVs), the 3rd generation of PV technologies, have undergone significant progress during the last decade boosted by the introduction of Roll-to-Roll (R2R) printing processing applied on plastics with any custom shape and size and almost unlimited coloring. OPVs on plastics focus on both existing, and new markets.

OET designs and develops R2R printing, laser processing and quality control technologies, aiming at cost-effective, high-throughput manufacturing of OPVs on flexible plastic surfaces. Its progress in scalable production and achieving the nanoscale precision in R2R printing machines, optical engineering, reduction of manufacturing costs and increasing yield and efficiency of OPVs is based on a huge R&D investment took place the last years in developing unique production lines, laser scribing technologies and in-line optical precision metrology and quality control tools.

OET’s experienced engineers have designed, developed and optimized a unique and versatile R2R printing manufacturing plant with a production capacity of OPVs of >100.000 m2 /year and planned to be manufactured a production capacity of 1.000.000 m2 /year by 2019.

The superior characteristics of OPVs as compared with Si-based PVs enable the development of products for new applications. OPVs are very thin and flexible, lightweight (<0.5kg/m2), can be produced by R2R printing processes, can be used under ambient interior lighting, can be made in custom shapes and sizes. In addition, their flexible slim line nature can be adapted to a number of static and mobile uses in various environments, they offer unlimited choice of coloration including color and aesthetic patterns while maintaining optical transparency.

OET’s OPV modules provide supplementary power to portable electronics, to automotive and buildings applications and help to improve aesthetics and performance in urban and wintery conditions where the light conditions are far from optimal for Si and other PV technologies. OET’s OPV modules, due to their lightweight (<0.5 kg/m2!), can be easily used on roof and sun visor on cars and provide electricity for onboard. Also, their flexibility and transparency make them ideal to be integrated on greenhouses, windows, buildings, and on the roof, adding extra value to the final building, such as energy, shading, aesthetic and design.
