Greece Leading the Energy Revolution: 3rd Generation Photovoltaics from Thessaloniki | ERT 360

Greece Leading the Energy Revolution: 3rd Generation Photovoltaics from Thessaloniki

At the 89th Thessaloniki International Fair, OET proudly presents a true energy revolution: 3rd generation photovoltaics. Flexible and semi-transparent, these innovative solar solutions will soon be mass-produced at the world’s first dedicated factory, located in Thessaloniki (Tagarades).

This breakthrough technology, developed by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (LTFN) and OET, has been successfully scaled up globally by OET. Thanks to advanced nano-printing techniques, optical engineering, and the unique properties of these devices, next-generation photovoltaics can be applied almost anywhere: on windows, rooftops, carports and pergolas, greenhouses and open field cultivation, as well as on electric vehicles, wearables, and both indoor and outdoor applications.

These are true bifacial devices, capable of generating power day and night, from any light source, while drastically reducing energy costs and environmental impact.

Applications & Benefits

  • In agriculture: Functioning as agrivoltaics, they can boost crop yields in greenhouses and open-field cultivation by up to 40%, lower temperatures by as much as 20°C, and protect plants from UV and infrared radiation.

  • In urban environments: They integrate seamlessly into modern architecture, reducing building temperatures, providing clean energy for both on-grid and off-grid applications, and cutting energy expenses dramatically.

With the advent of mass production, costs will fall significantly, paving the way for large-scale adoption across industries such as automotive, tourism, and construction.

As Em. Margaritis, Chief Investment Manager of OET, emphasizes:

“This is not just innovation; it is one of the rare cases where a Greek company holds a world-first in technology. Starting 35 years ago at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, OET has now become an international leader.”

From Thessaloniki to the world, Greece sets the example: clean energy, global leadership, and a sustainable path towards a climate-neutral economy.
